World Series 2027 and the MLB Playoffs: Format, Dates and Tickets

The World Series 2027 will crown the champion of a 12-team MLB postseason, but the official playoff dates have not been announced yet. This guide explains the format from the Wild Card Series to the Fall Classic, uses the 2026 calendar as a reference point, summarizes where the 2026 playoffs stand on October 11, and describes how playoff tickets usually work.

World Series 2027: what is known and what is not announced

The regular season of 2027 ends on Sunday, September 26, 2027. The postseason dates that follow have not been officially announced. It is reasonable to expect the playoffs to begin around the end of the regular season and the World Series to arrive in the autumn, but those are expectations, not facts, and this page will not give you a calendar that does not exist yet.

The best reference is the previous year. In 2026, the Wild Card Series started on September 29, 2026, and the World Series is set to begin on October 23, 2026. A similar structure in 2027 is plausible, but only the official announcement will settle it. Use the alert at the bottom of this page to receive the dates the moment they are published.

Also keep the broader picture in mind: the labor agreement expires on December 1, 2026, and any disruption to the 2027 season could affect everything that comes after it. Nothing is decided. For the regular-season dates already published, see the 2027 MLB schedule.

MLB playoffs 2027 format: 12 teams from Wild Card to World Series

The postseason has twelve clubs: six from the American League and six from the National League. In each league, the three division winners and three wild-card teams qualify. The structure follows four rounds.

The Wild Card Series in the MLB playoffs

The two division winners with the weakest records and the three wild-card teams meet in the first round, a best-of-three series. The top two division winners in each league skip this round, which gives them rest and a clear advantage.

The Division Series and Championship Series

The Division Series is a best-of-five. The winners advance to the League Championship Series, a best-of-seven in each league, known as the ALCS and NLCS. Those are the stage where the pennant is decided.

The World Series 2027 format

The two pennant winners meet in the World Series, a best-of-seven. The first team to four wins is champion. Home-field advantage in the Fall Classic has been given to the club with the better regular-season record in recent years, and that principle is expected to continue, although the official 2027 rules will confirm it.

Why does this matter for you? Because every round has a different ticket pattern, different demand and different lengths. A best-of-three offers fewer possible home dates than a best-of-seven, and the number of games played depends on how the series unfolds.

World Series 2026 reference: where the playoffs stand on October 11

The 2026 regular season is complete, and the division winners were the Rays (98-64) in the AL East, the Guardians (85-77) in the AL Central, the Astros (81-81) in the AL West, the Braves (94-68) in the NL East, the Brewers (103-59) in the NL Central and the Dodgers (100-62) in the NL West.

The 2026 League Championship Series

As of October 11, 2026, the ALCS is between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cleveland Guardians, while the NLCS is between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The winners will meet in the World Series, beginning on October 23, 2026.

The defending champion: the 2025 Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2025 World Series by 4-3 against Toronto, claiming their second title in a row. That makes the club a reference point for what a repeat looks like, and it adds interest to the current NLCS.

We do not list individual players here because the roster picture changes constantly. For the full set of clubs, visit the teams page.

World Series 2027 tickets: how playoff tickets usually work

Playoff tickets are different from regular-season tickets. In general, the home club releases tickets for each round only after the matchups are known, and sales are frequently limited to a short window. Season-ticket holders and club members commonly receive priority, and the remaining inventory is sold afterward.

"If necessary" games and conditional sales

For series that may or may not reach a given game, tickets are generally sold for games listed as "if necessary." If the series ends earlier, those games are not played, and in general buyers receive a refund. That is why many fans purchase for a game that might never happen: it is a conditional ticket, not a promise. Always read the refund policy for the exact order you place.

Prices and the secondary market for the World Series

Demand for World Series games is among the highest in the sport, and a secondary market always exists, with dynamic pricing. Prices can move quickly as matchups are set. Compare with care, keep records, and be cautious about listings that seem unusually cheap.

Planning without knowing the matchup

Because the participants are known only late, a flexible approach is best: refundable lodging, flexible flights and a budget for the unexpected. If you want the next step as soon as it is available, join the alert on this page or press the tickets button when it appears.

World Series 2027: choosing a round, a city and a plan

Which playoff round is best for a first-time visitor

The Division Series offers more games and generally a calmer path to a seat than the Fall Classic, while still delivering a playoff atmosphere. The League Championship Series sits in the middle. The World Series is the grandest stage but also the most demanding to arrange.

Big-city atmosphere in October

Playoff baseball changes a city. Bars fill, streets are decorated, and everyone seems to have a lucky charm. If you travel, leave extra time for transport, and expect heavier security checks at the gate. Our Yankees game guide and first game guide give practical tips that apply to many ballparks.

Weather and rain in the postseason

October nights can be cold, and rain can postpone a game. Dress in layers and read the postponement and refund rules before buying. A rescheduled game can also change your travel plans, so keep your options open.

World Series 2027 and the CBA: why the playoff calendar is uncertain

The collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, 2026. As of October 11, 2026, owners are proposing a salary cap, there is no agreement and no lockout. A work stoppage could delay the start of the 2027 season, and in that scenario, the playoff calendar could also be adjusted. The last lockout ran from December 2021 to March 2022 and the season stayed at 162 games, with Opening Day pushed to April 7, 2022.

That precedent suggests that a delay does not necessarily shorten the season, but it is only precedent, and each situation is different. Our lockout page tracks the latest. For the moment, the right approach is to wait for official dates before booking anything non-refundable for autumn 2027.

World Series 2027 versus other baseball events to follow

The postseason is not the only way to see big games. Spring games in Arizona and Florida are relaxed and cheap in spirit, as explained in our Spring Training guide. The All-Star Game on July 13, 2027, at Wrigley Field is another landmark. Special regular-season games include the Field of Dreams game on August 12 and the Little League Classic on August 19.

Following the MLB postseason from abroad

If you live far from the United States, the time difference matters. Playoff games often finish well after midnight in Europe, so plan sleep or watch parties in advance. We cover this in more detail in our tickets FAQ.

How many teams make the MLB playoffs in 2027?

Twelve teams qualify, six per league: three division winners and three wild-card clubs. The two best division winners in each league skip the first round. Then come the Division Series, the League Championship Series and the World Series, each with its own ticket sales and its own demand pattern.

Who won the World Series in 2025?

The Los Angeles Dodgers won the 2025 World Series by 4-3 over Toronto, their second consecutive title. In 2026, the Dodgers are in the NLCS against Milwaukee, while Tampa Bay and Cleveland meet in the ALCS, as of October 11, 2026.

What does an 'if necessary' playoff ticket mean?

It is a ticket for a game that is played only if the series is still alive. If the series ends sooner, the game does not happen, and in general buyers are refunded. Always confirm the refund rules for your specific order before paying.

Can I buy World Series 2027 tickets now?

No. Playoff tickets are generally released only after the matchups are known, often in a short window and with priority for season-ticket holders. Dates for 2027 are not announced either. Use the alert on this page to be notified when anything appears.

Could a lockout affect the 2027 playoffs?

Nothing is decided. The labor agreement expires on December 1, 2026, with no deal and no lockout as of October 11, 2026. A stoppage could shift the start of the season and the calendar that follows. Wait for official dates before booking non-refundable autumn travel.
