World Baseball Classic: History 2006-2026, Champions and the Next Edition

The World Baseball Classic is the sport's biggest tournament of national teams. Since 2006 it has produced six editions and five different champions, the latest being Venezuela in 2026. This guide covers its history, the full list of winners, the Miami final, how the event works and what is known about the next edition, announced for 2030 with no host or dates.

What the World Baseball Classic is and why it matters

The World Baseball Classic, or WBC, brings national teams of professional players together from around the world. It started in 2006 to answer a simple question: where do the best teams on the planet stand when players are not defending their clubs?

The World Baseball Classic versus club baseball

Unlike the MLB season, this is played for national pride. Stands fill with flags, and first-round games can feel like finals. That contrast with the regular season is the reason it has caught on.

Who can play in the World Baseball Classic

Players may represent the country of their birth, their citizenship or their parents' origin, which creates rosters full of family stories. There are also pitch limits per game to protect arms, and a run-ahead rule that can end a game early.

World Baseball Classic history: from 2006 to 2026

The tournament began with 16 teams in 2006 and has held 20 since 2023. It has been played six times. The edition due in 2021 was postponed by the pandemic and took place in 2023.

2006 and 2009: Japan opens the World Baseball Classic record

Japan won the first edition by beating Cuba 10-6 in the final in San Diego. Three years later it repeated in Los Angeles, beating South Korea 5-3 in ten innings and showing that Asian baseball could stand toe to toe with the Americas.

2013 and 2017: the Dominican Republic and the United States

In 2013 the Dominican Republic went unbeaten, with a 3-0 win over Puerto Rico in the San Francisco final. In 2017 the United States claimed its first title with an 8-0 win over Puerto Rico in Los Angeles.

2023 and 2026: Japan returns, Venezuela takes its first crown

Japan won a third title in 2023 with a 3-2 victory over the United States in Miami. In 2026 Venezuela finally reached the top, again against the Americans and again in Miami.

World Baseball Classic titles by country

Japan has three championships, while the Dominican Republic, the United States and Venezuela have one each. The United States has played in two finals it did not win, Puerto Rico reached two finals without a title, and Cuba and South Korea each lost one.

The 2026 World Baseball Classic final: Venezuela crowned

On March 17, 2026, at loanDepot park in Miami, Venezuela beat the United States 3-2 to win its first title. The game turned in the ninth inning on a double that put the winners ahead for good, and the close confirmed one of the tightest finals in tournament history.

How Venezuela reached the World Baseball Classic final

The 2026 Classic featured 20 teams, with opening rounds in four venues: Tokyo, Houston, Miami and San Juan. Venezuela cleared every stage up to the last game in Miami, where Caribbean fans filled the stands with color.

What the 2026 title meant for Venezuelan baseball

It was a national celebration. Venezuela is also a permanent member of the Caribbean Series, and the win ends a stretch in which the country sent big talent to the majors without a national-team crown.

How the World Baseball Classic works: format and rules

The tournament mixes pool play with straight knockout games. In 2026, 20 teams took part and the pools were played in four cities. The best advance to the quarterfinals, semifinals and final.

Differences between the World Baseball Classic and the Olympics

The Classic brings together 20 teams, while the Olympic tournament has a much smaller field. Their calendars are also set separately, and teams may field different players depending on availability.
